How to get to the ICTP from Ronchi/Trieste Airport

1. There are both public transport buses (SAITA line, blue buses) and Alitalia shuttle buses leaving from Trieste (i.e. Ronchi) airport, about 40 minutes away from the center of Trieste, to Trieste. The former is cheaper, the latter slightly faster and perhaps marginally more convenient.

2. You do not want to go all the way into Trieste! Tell the driver that you want to get off in Grignano, or mumble something involving "Centro di Fisica". The way to recognize when you are getting there (to gently remind the driver to drop you off) is the following: at some point, the bus will drive along a rather scenic road along and high above the coast to your right. After about 10 kilometers you will see a rather striking white castle sitting in a bay down by the seaside ahead of you, Miramare Castle. Now it is time to get off. The ICTP sits right above the park of the castle.

3. Having gotten off the bus, you should see two short tunnels (under the park of the castle) ahead of you, following the road towards Trieste, and a road running down the hill towards the seaside just behind you. What you do now depends on when you are arriving and where you are staying:
   • If you are arrving on the weekend or outside office hours and are staying at the Adriatico:

     Turn towards the two tunnels but, before you get there, turn right into a little footpath/steps leading you down to the seaside. The huge building dominating the little bay, a former hotel, is the Adriatico guest house, the entrance is 50 metres up the road leading back up the hill.

   • If you are arrving on the weekend or outside office hours and you are staying at the Galileo:

     Cross the main road (carefully!), go through the two tunnels. You can enter the ICTP premises by turning left into the parking lot immediately after the second tunnel. Walk towards the main building and then follow the signs - basically you have to walk up the hill behind the ICTP main building.

     In either case, the receptionists at the guest house will then take care of the rest.

   • If you are arriving on a working day during office hours, go to the ICTP main building (through the two tunnels, then turn to your left) and go the office of the Conference Secretary, Patrizia Passarella (Room 277) or join the action in Room C.
