General

The Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP) is a scientific journal owned by the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA - Trieste, Italy), written, run and distributed by electronic means. In running this journal the objective is to capitalise on the innovative advantages of the new media: rapidity of communication, broad diffusion and low costs.

By introducing an automated and electronic peer review system mediated by computer, JHEP complements the present system of preprint distribution via the online arXiv of the Los Alamos National Laboratory that has so successfully replaced the conventional system.

Subject areas

JHEP encompasses the following areas of theoretical and experimental physics: Collider Physics, Underground and Large Array Physics, Astroparticles, Gauge Field Theories, General Relativity and Gravitation, Mathematical Methods of Physics, Solvable Models, Strong Interactions, Weak Interactions, Quantum Field Theory, Statistical Field Theories, String Theory, Supersymmetry, Duality, Branes.

Editorial policy

The quality of the journal is guaranteed by the Advisory and Editorial Boards, composed by distinguished scientists in the field. These boards jointly establish the scientific policy of JHEP (e.g., the scientific quality of accepted papers).

Papers must address one or more of the subject areas of JHEP. The only criteria for accepting papers are scientific quality, originality and relevance; length is less important, provided that it is appropriate to the information presented. Editors are asked to apply a strict quality filter in selecting papers for publication.

Papers submitted to JHEP cannot be submitted to other refereed journals.

Editors and referees operate anonymously, but they can reveal their identity if they so wish.

Structure

JHEP is structured as follows:

Editors are JHEP's most important asset. They are in charge of assigning one or more referees to each submitted paper and of making the final decision as to whether or not a paper is to be published. JHEP has a large editorial board, in order to provide competent coverage of all the areas indicated by the keywords and thus avoid generic decisions or the inappropriate selection of referees.

The Advisory Board is composed of distinguished scientists who periodically review the journal and advise on its scientific policy. In the event of a major problems the Advisory Board is consulted.

The Executive Office is in charge of supervising the functioning of the journal in collaboration with the Editorial Board. The Executive Office monitors the journal daily and intervenes in the event of any problems that may arise. Local system support is provided at each one of the journal nodes.

How JHEP works

The online publication of papers is made possible by the complete automation of the editorial work which is carried out by a software robot, thereby reducing costs and speeding up the procedure. The software performs all the steps in the editorial procedure: the submission of papers, their assignment to the appropriate editors, the review by referees, the contacts between editors, referees and the Executive Office, the revision, proof-reading and publication of papers, and the administration of the journal. Accepted papers are made available on the IoPP website.
Editors, referees and authors have their personal web pages, where they run the editorial procedure or check the status of the papers.

The JHEP software consists of three major families of programs. The first governs the interaction between JHEP and the scientific community, and provides the section where papers are submitted by authors and where they are published. The second family runs the interface among editors, between editors and referees, and between editors and authors. The third family controls the administration of the journal.

To assure reliability and fast connections, JHEP is a highly fault-tolerant network of dynamical nodes, which are not passive mirrors. Currently active sites are:

All nodes are equivalent and kept synchronised. All events taking place at any of the nodes are immediately notified to the other nodes. On notification, the nodes execute the corresponding action and are updated accordingly. All transactions are encrypted to protect the data.

Special multimedia facilities have been added to enhance the possibilities offered by the web:

  • powerful search engines replace the table of contents and indexes used by paper journals

  • papers, published in three different formats (PDF, PS, DVI), are hypertextual, with links within the articles themselves and to the papers quoted in the references.
