MEDICAL PHYSICS IN SUDAN
OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS

Summary. Medical physics in Sudan started in 1967. In the same year activities in radiation therapy and diagnostic service also started. At that time, there were only three physicists in the country. Since then the number of the medical physicists had started to increase gradually. Unfortunately, it is difficult to keep them in practice due to the low salaries. This reason led them to flee overseas or they held teaching positions at the universities within the country. Those who went to universities introduced medical physics courses at their facilities. This motivated the newcomers to the field to be aware of medical physics before they joined the practice.

It is worth mentioning that there was only one radiation facility in the whole country until 1999, namely Radiation and Isotopes Centre Khartoum (RICK). Another facility was established 180 km from the former, and it is affiliated to the University Of Gazera. The authorities have planned to build four new hospitals to be distributed evenly in all Sudan states. A qualified medical physicist is needed to safely supervise those radiation facilities. IAEA is supporting the training but they also have limited funds. Now ICTP is involved in training of two of our member staff through their STEP programme.

To improve the practice in the hospitals I suggest that ICTP funds a few short visits to support some Italian prominent medical physicists to come to Sudan and transfer some of their knowledge through the lectures . Establishment and ICTP support of links between our institutes and any departments such as Udine group and Trieste hospital will help us to remain current in the field. Moreover donations of any kind, of equipment, QC kits, etc. will help greatly our new medical physics training programme. Donation of journals will improve our libraries.
