Honestly, prototypes like VNC and BSCW are rarely used at present.
Some reasons are:
- unatural work process for people (too complicated?, updates Client/Server model).
- packages require that projects adapt to their way of operation - not flexible enough.
- in cases where these systems would be appropriate, either potential users do not want to learn,
were not easily supportable by the IT staff or expressed little commitment (due to work overload).
From experience the smaller, simpler projects that adapt to the way the educators or researchers
want to work are the ones that become used even in the presence of much more sophisticated and mature packages.
