The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, in the framework of a programme sponsored by the Italian Government and Italian research institutions, offers grants to scientists from Developing Countries (Central and Eastern Europe included) to carry out training and research in Italian Universities as well as in public and private research centres. The average length of a visit is 6 - 12 months.
A number of grants will be made available in 2002 - 2003 in the field of :
Part of these fellowships will be awarded, for a selected group of countries, in collaboration with the Direzione Generale per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio IX - of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
The minimum amount of these grants will be Euro 1,200 per month. Limited funds for travel expenses will be available in case these are not covered by other sources. Health insurance coverage will be provided for visitors and their accompanying family members. A monthly family allowance for those having dependant family members will be granted.

Development of new diagnostic techniques for screening tests on
blood samples analysing different oxidation processes on erythrocyte
collected from healthy persons and from patients suffering from
cancer. Investigation are also on the effect of potassium ascorbate
(K-ascorbate) since there are indicazione that io has anticancer
properties through an antioxidative mechanism and it seems able
to equilibrate the correct potassium exchange.

Polymer-based biomaterials used in oral environment: composite
resins, compomers and glass-ionomers.
Experimental study on the following topics: factors affecting
the polymerization, dimensional variation, thermal properties,

Use of the statistical parametric mapping for functional RM imaging.
Radiotherapy
Use of the Monte Carlo BEAM code to validate Treatment Planning
System referring to IMRT; Comparison with experimental measurements.
Use of a new miniaturized photon radiosurgery system: dosimetry
using Gafchromic films and Monte Carlo code; development of a
treatment planning system for conformal irradiation; in vivo measurements
of temperature.
Equipment available: 3D TPS ADAC. 3D TPS Radionics for radiosurgery,
SPM, Matlab with several toolbox, Mathematica, Monte Carlo BEAM
code, Monte Carlo MCNP code, PTW 3D water phantom; Gafchromic
system based on CCD camera; several type of ion chambers, MOSFETs,
Diamond.
