The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in the framework of a programme sponsored by the Italian government and Italian research institutions, offers grants to scientists from Developing Countries to carry out training and research in Italian Universities as well as in public and private research centres. The average length of a visit is 6-12 months.

A number of grants will be made available in the year 2001, in the field of :

Optical Physics and Lasers

Bilateral arrangements have been established by ICTP and Governments of certain developing countries for fellowships in Italian research laboratories on a co-financing basis.

The minimum amount of these grants will be Italian Lire 2,000,000 per month. Limited funds for travel expenses will be available in case these expenses are not covered by other sources. Health insurance coverage will be provided for the scientists and their accompanying family members. A monthly family allowance for those having dependant family members will be granted.

A list of laboratories which have agreed to host scientists, with an indication of their main activities, is herewith included.

Research themes: Study of novel remote sensing techniques based on interferometric configurations featuring optical feedback into semiconductor lasers.

Development of instruments and sensors for fiber optics applications and for non-contact non-destructive testing (vibration, distance and displacement measurements on diffusive surfaces).

spectrum analyzer, wavelength meter, F-P filters, laser interferometer, laser vibrometer,
OTDR, photodetectors, power meters, analog digital and sampling oscilloscopes,
low-frequency and RF spectrum analyzers, fiber optic equipment, fusion splicer, most
instruments connectable to portable PC via GPIB card, ORCAD software for electronic
circuits, electronics and mechanics workshop
